Modernization of the Beira-Rio: development status
Data: 26/03/2013
The major differential of the new and modern Beira-Rio stadium is now being outlined: this week, workers will work on assembling and hoisting the metal structure – produced in steel ¬– forming the Stadium’s roof. In the first stage, the structural bases, weighing a total 25 tons, will be assembled and erected with the aid of two cranes. Next, the two last parts will be hoisted, set to cover the grandstands. The metal structure of each of the 65 sheets will weigh 40 tons and measure 38 meters high by 53 meters wide. The metal structure will also support the large screens, which will exhibit details of the match, and the pitch lighting.
The new roof will provide a series of advantages for spectators and also for players entering the field. For supporters, greater comfort, sheltering them from the elements, providing protection from the sun, rain and wind. For players, a sensation of greater proximity with fans thanks to the lasting sound reverberations inside the stadium. Natural lighting will also be maintained thanks to the cutting-edge roof design.
The membrane – produced in polytetrafluoroethylene – is opaque and translucent between the sheets for better use of sunlight and will have self-cleaning characteristics. Some sheets will be able to harvest water for reuse, set for installation in the final stage of the roof.
