Beira-Rio set to host five FIFA World Cup matches in 2014

The countdown to the 2014 FIFA World Cup has began for all Colorados, after all, there is only around a year to go before the new and modernized Beira-Rio stadium welcomes matches part of the planet’s largest football competition. The World Cup in Brazil will officially be opened on June 12, 2014, at Arena de São Paulo.

On the 15th, the home of Inter will be the stage of a match part of the first round of the tournament. Gigante will also play host to three other games in the eliminatory phase (on June 18, 22 and 25) and one match for the round of 16, on June 30. The table of matchups is yet to be defined by FIFA.

Works on Beira-Rio continue at an intense rhythm to ensure that, a year from now, when the entire world’s focus is on Brazil, the Colorado stadium will proudly represent Porto Alegre with the expected quality. At the start of June this year, 71% of the works had already been completed. Beira-Rio is slowly transforming into one of the world’s most modern and beautiful sporting complexes. The process has been finalized for the upper tier of the grandstands. Full recovery of the concrete was implemented, along with the application of the finishing layer.

The lower grandstand tier will soon be equipped with new seats

The pre-molded sections of the lower grandstands have been concluded. The new seats will soon be installed. As such, the concrete is being bored to receive the new chairs.

There will be 16 circulation towers for the World Cup (two temporary). Following the World Cup, there will be 14. Twelve of the fourteen circulation towers have been completed. The new stadium will boast 19 internal and external elevators.

The new stadium will have a total of 81 restrooms (women’s, men’s, children’s and those for people with disabilities). 

Installation of the roof includes 65 metal structural modules. Each module is split in four parts (P1, P2, P3 and P4). So far, 19 of the P1 and P2 modules have been installed, in addition to one P3. By the end of June, a further 15 modules, including P1, P2, P3 and P4 types, are expected to be installed. The entire metal structure should be completed by November, while the PTFE membrane that will cover the metal part will be finished in December.

The pitch infrastructure installation stages have been concluded. The post-planting stage, known as grow in, is currently underway. The vacuum drainage system will be finalized with the installation of the main equipment and the definitive irrigation system, as well as installation of artificial grass in areas adjacent to the field. Bermuda TifGrand is the grass being used at Beira-Rio. Beira-Rio’s pitch will measure 105 x 685 meters.
